3M announced the next generation ComTac VIII headset at this week’s 2025 Shot Show. The redesign improves noise reduction, sound quality, and situational awareness. The new headband makes it easy to transition to rail connectors and the earcups are smaller too. Hearing protection is 23dB and can be used with earplugs for up to 40dB SNR.
The Hearing Defender model does not include a boom mic or support radio connectivity. There are single comm and multi-comm models compatible with many 2-way radios. The headset colors available are coyote brown, O.D. green, and charcoal grey. Check out the video below.
A Single Downlead For Multi-Comm
Choosing the correct headset and PTT can get complicated, The redesigned single-comm 2-way radio interface supports 4-pin U/174 NATO and Peltor formats. The models ending in -47 are compatible with the NATO wired ComTac V, VI, and VII PTT adapters ending with -02.
The multi-comm headset has a single downlead for either a new 5-pin U-384/U or Nexus 10-pin circular connector. Selecting the correct headset and PTT will require planning to avoid compatibility errors.
The video below explains radio comms interoperability in more detail.
